Background:
Lane Furniture Company (Altavista, VA) was founded in 1907 by several mem-bers of the Lane family. Origially named The Standard Red Cedar Chest Compa-ny, the company chaged its name in 1922 to Lane Furniture Company. Following WWI, Lane became a leading furniture manufacturer of an extensive line of furniture products and, in particular, the product that made the company famous, the cedar chest. During WWII, The Lane Company continued to make cedar chests, while also producing aircraft plywood and wood airplane tail assemblies, landing craft parts, glider wings and dogsleds. In 1987, the company was acquired by In-terco, Inc., a St. Louis-based conglomerate. During the early 1990’s, Lane was the second largest furniture company in Virginia.
