For sale is a used MIJ Emperador "Gibson Mastertone Style" Banjo - Natural, with a reddish brown finish on the mahogany neck and resonator. Includes original MIJ Hard Case. This instrument was built during the Golden Age of Japanese banjo building. In the 1970s, some Japanese companies like Emperador, Aria, Ventura, etc. produced banjos that were close copies of Gibson instruments. Many of the Japanese Mastertone style banjos were so good they are often referred to by players and collectors as “Masterclones”. A legal action by Gibson against Ibanez and the looming threat of more legal battles prompted Japanese companies to stop producing such direct copies and banjos from this era became known as “lawsuit models.”
This 5-string banjo seems to be based on the Gibson RB-250. The headstock has an identical tube and plate flange, dual coordinator rods, clamshell-style tailpiece, and fiddle shape headstock with Mother-of-Pearl inlaid diamond shapes and vintage style script with a Emperador logo. This "pearl bling" distinguish them from more basic instruments. The fingerboard features Mother-of-Pearl inlays copying the same "leaves and bows" style inlay pattern used in the 70's RB-250. The 2 concentric rings on the resonator imitates that of the 60's RB-250. The only features missing in this MIJ copy are the MOP F hole headstock inlays and a Mastertone block inlay at the base of the fretboard. After the lawsuit, the Emperador banjo was still made, but it had a different shaped peghead, a different style of flange and no concentric rings in the resonator.
A classic choice for both collectors and performers alike who wants to upgrade their current instrument. They are beautifully crafted instruments and have the clear tone that you’d expect from a quality banjo. While the truss rod cover says "Custom-made" I believe this was just a marketing term to promote sales.
22 frets. 24 hooks/brackets hold the head on. Total length of banjo is 38”
Weight - 11pounds
This banjo is in very good shape overall especially considering its around 50 years old. It could pass for 'excellent' condition but there is a little fret and banjo head wear showing. No visible dents or dings in the finish. Neck is straight. There are only a few small marks and light scratches. Banjo head looks good but there are two areas of pick scratch marks where the white coating has worn off.
The original case is in very good condition. It has Yellow/Orange colored padded lining with one storage compartment. All latches work. Missing original key. The chrome metal trim makes this case really pop in addition to providing edge protection.
See photos. Please view the pictures carefully and consider them part of the description.
Appears to be completely original with the exception of the strings and possibly wood bridge/saddle. Sale includes thin white shoulder strap, 3 different lug wrenches, and assorted thumb and guitar picks.

More than just an attractive wall hanger, transport back in time and experience vintage Japan quality in a unique banjo with a nice voice.
